Chances are you’ve never had homemade Sloppy Joes. I know I never had until I found this recipe in Joy of Cooking. Now that I know I can never go back. These Sloppy Joes are tangy and meaty and are a classic one skillet meal. So relax, kick off your shoes, and enjoy the real deal Sloppy Joe.
Ingredients (Serves 4)
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 small onion, diced
1 small red bell pepper, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 large celery stalk, diced
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (optional)
Salt and Pepper
1 1/4 lbs. ground beef
1/2 cup Chili Sauce (I used Heinz)
1/2 beer or water
3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Hot red pepper sauce to taste
4 large rolls (I used ciabatta rolls)
Instructions
Heat oil in a large skillet. Add the onion, bell pepper, garlic, celery, thyme, salt and pepper to taste. Cook, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are tender but not browned, about 10 minutes.
Add the ground beef and cooked until browned.
Add the chili sauce, beer, Worcestershire sauce, and red pepper sauce.
Simmer partially covered for 15 minutes
Meanwhile, halved the rolls if they are not already split. Toast cut side up under a broiler.
When done, sprinkle the Sloppy Joe mixture with scallion greens.
Spoon mixture onto the bottom halves of the rolls and cover with the tops.
