Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free. ~ Langston Hughes

This post was suppose to be ready for the 4th of July, but time spent with friends and family overruled the plans I had made for myself.  The hamburger is the quintessential food of our dear country and this year I did something I’ve never done before.  I made my own buns.

Golden soft perfect little buns.  When you see how easily they come together and how fluffy, soft and delicious they come out, you’ll be ever so happy you made them.  They are far better than any you could buy at your corner grocery store.  Happy Independence Day to all my countrymen and women!  May God bless her.

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Ingredients (Yields 12 small buns)

1 cup lukewarm water
2 tbsp butter, at room temperature
1 large egg
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tablespoon instant yeast
1 tsp onion powder (optional)

Instructions

Mix all the ingredients together and knead to make a soft, smooth dough. The dough is ready when it springs back after pressing it with your thumb.

Cover the dough, and let it rise for 1 hour or until it’s nearly doubled in bulk.
Gently deflate the dough, and divide it into 12 pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball then flatten with the palm of your hand.

Place the buns on a lightly greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise for about an hour, until noticeably puffy.

Bake the buns in a preheated 375°F oven for 12 minutes or until golden.

About Me

I love food! I read cookbooks like they were novels. I get giddy in a farmer’s market. I find a chicken in a pot surrounded by carrots, onion, and celery a thing of beauty. My favorite sound is Mmmmmmmm! Read More…
