Soft golden hamburger buns are easy to make and better than any that you'll find in a typical grocery store.
Recipe type: bread
Cuisine: American
Serves: 12
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tbsp butter, at room temperature
  • 1 large egg
  • 3¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1 tsp onion powder (optional)
  1. Mix all the ingredients together and knead to make a soft, smooth dough. The dough is ready when it springs back after pressing it with your thumb.
  2. Cover the dough, and let it rise for 1 hour or until it's nearly doubled in bulk.
  3. Gently deflate the dough, and divide it into 12 pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball then flatten with the palm of your hand.
  4. Place the buns on a lightly greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise for about an hour, until noticeably puffy.
  5. Bake the buns in a preheated 375°F oven for 12 minutes or until golden.
  6. Cool the buns on a rack.
Most of prep time is waiting for the dough to rise.
